My experience at First Settlement Physical Therapy was excellent. My PT and PTAs were professional and focused on my recovery. Their focus combined with an effective personal approach, provided the support that I needed to reach my goals after my total knee replacement. Another part of the program that was beneficial, was providing me instruction and support for my at home Physical Therapy. I had physical therapy (PT) done on my shoulder at the First Settlement Physical Therapy (FSPT) in Athens, Ohio. I am very satisfied with the care provided to me and would gladly recommend this facility to anyone who needs PT. Dr. Curtis Sykes evaluated and treated my shoulder. His treatment that included massage of shoulder greatly improved my shoulder mobility. For the last few years, I was unable to straighten my left arm; his treatment restored my ability to straighten my arm. Dr. Curtis is an experienced and highly competent professional with great bedside manners. Caroline, a PT doctoral student and Skylar, a PTA, helped me with my PT exercises. Both were professional, friendly and very caring. During the twice-weekly visits for eight weeks, I was also able to observe other PT providers at this facility. I saw each one of them working diligently in a very caring manner. I also appreciate Marla at the front desk for her help in scheduling my visits and her friendly and caring attitude. I summary I would say we are lucky to have Dr. Sykes leading the FSPT in Athens, Ohio. After the reconstruction of my 5th metacarpal I feared I would never be able to fully use my hand again. But because of the months of time and work put in by my physical therapists, I am back to full range of movement in 4 months. I can't thank you all enough for the patience and kindness you showed me throughout my healing. Athens FSPT has been my sole experience with physical therapy, and I firmly believe it’s the only place I’ll ever go. They effortlessly transition between patients, ensuring that each one receives personalized attention without feeling rushed, even during peak hours with double-booked appointments. They offer flexibility with appointments to accommodate my schedule. They collaborate effectively, mentor interns, and offer specialized certified procedures like dry needling. Throughout my time there, I’ve had the privilege of working with several exceptional physical therapists and physical therapy assistants. However, I must express my deepest gratitude to Brittany and Jackie. They are an incredible team that has dedicated themselves to addressing the intricate issues I’ve been grappling with regarding my Achilles tendon. Had a tough time finding a place to help with herniated disc recovery and IT band issues. From my first session at FSPT I had a personalized and targeted plan that helped me to resume normal activity, exercise, and strength training. Highly professional therapy always with a contagious element of youthfulness and light heartedness. Well trained therapists are all beautiful and fit and friendly. (Including the guys). I’m a 76 year old fellow with an hip replacement. First Settlement of Athens brought this old body to a state of fitness and flexibility that I haven’t seen in years. I had been to another PT facility for my shoulder and was told it was as good as it was going to be....  But then I went to First Settlement.  Everyone there is wonderful, but Mara and Jackie are amazing.  They tailor each session to your specific situation and needs, are creative and innovative in approaches, and are just plain fine people.  I have "graduated" with an amazing shoulder improvement, and now am starting work with them on another issue. Dr. Jeff Cowen at FSPT provides truly elite-level physical therapy. Following an old fracture and surgery, I struggled with ankle and hip pain and limited mobility. Jeff applied precise mobilizations (of which few therapist have the required strength to move a talus surrounded by plates and screws) and tailored exercises that have significantly improved my movement and function. I’m now able to return to my sport and daily physical activities with less pain a stiffness. Including hitting triangle submissions in jiu-jitsu, that I simply could not do before thanks to Jeff!. My husband had shoulder surgery on October 15, 2024 in Athens, Ohio. At the recommendation of his surgeon, he started physical therapy at First Settlement Athens during the 2nd week following his surgery. It has been an amazing journey of rehab, and we are very thankful for the caring and highly-qualified staff who guided him through the process. As of today, February 4, he has "graduated." We are both thrilled with the amazing progress he made in regaining his strength and his range of motion. Thank you, First Settlement staff!! I have been so impressed with my therapy and the therapists at the Athens First settlement Physical Therapy. Jeff was awesome and very attentive and caring. I've been to a few other PT places in town and this BY FAR has been the best. Curtis took the time to listen to what I wanted my recovery to look like and worked with me on strategic and progressive goals. He has a strategic approach and is good at communicating the plan (and is open to adjusting/personalizing it as needed). Everyone I worked with throughout my recovery process was friendly, professional, and caring. Recovery can be frustrating and having a PT who is supportive and understanding is extremely important. First Settlement in Athens is an amazing PT clinic! I worked mainly with Curt Sykes and had my expectations exceeded. Very friendly and comfortable environment. Always felt better when I left (I was rehabbing from hamstring tear). I would highly recommend for anyone.

Curt Sykes is the best PT I've seen.  I do a lot of trail running and every once in a while have a need for some PT.  Curt thinks outside the box and has lots of tools and tricks that really help (paired with the exercises he gives).  Marla at the front desk is also super helpful and kind.  FSPT in Athens was a great experience and I'd recommend them to anyone in the area who needs overall outstanding service from a PT who wants to help you heal from whatever injury/procedure you're dealing with.  10/10 would recommend.

This is from Kenneth Turner. He has been going to First Settlement Physical Therapy for awhile now. He loves going he said he feels a lot stronger. His therapist is so nice and very Patient with him. He said she really works him hard but, when he's done he feels a lot better. He said to say thanks for all the help. I’ve been to fspt twice. Once for a neck/spine injury and once for a shoulder. My experience echoes most of the other positive reviews. Curt is outstanding at his job. He listens, he cares and his trigger point technique has really helped me. Brian, Misty, John and everybody that has worked with me have always been nice and professional. This is actually William’s wife...All members of their staff are highly skilled and professional. They were extremely patient and encouraging with me. (And I require a lot of patience!). Curt Sykes took the time to listen to my history and concerns before setting my course of treatment. All staff were knowledgeable as well as caring, guiding me to greater strength and less pain. First Settlement was were I went for rehab after I had bilateral knee replacement.  The experience of learning to use my legs again was first rate.  Even though I experienced some health issues due to the surgery, Kurt and Misty were very patient with me as we worked through it.  Upon completion I had met all the goals set for me.
